Stowe Wedding Photographer

When thinking of a destination wedding, one often conjures up images of tropical beaches, island music, and fruity cocktails.  You might be surprised to find out that Stowe, Vermont is a top choice for destination weddings.  Given its close proximity to Boston and New York, and its year round splendor, Stowe attracts many couples saying “I do”.

The white steeple church, restored covered bridge, and the quaint stored-lined Main Street combine to make Stowe the prototypical Vermont resort town.  Home to Vermont’s tallest peak, Mount Mansfield, it’s easy to understand why Stowe is nicknamed the “Ski Capital of the East.”    While winter is Stowe’s bread and butter, the town transforms during the various seasons, each one offering gorgeous scenery and equally exciting activities.

Stowe begins greeting you even before you officially arrive.  A few minutes after exiting Route 89 in Waterbury, you are welcomed by two well-known gentlemen: Ben & Jerry.  The iconic Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory is located on the left as you drive towards Stowe.  Take a quick detour and enjoy a 30-minute tour of the factory, a taste of ice cream, and peruse the gift shop.  Continue down Route 100 towards Stowe and a stop at Cold Hollow Cider Mill is also a must.  Famous for their apple cider products, including apple cider donuts and apple cider slushies, Cold Hollow Cider Mill is New England’s largest producer of apple cider.  If you are interested in getting the party started a little early, try the “Barn Dance”, Cold Hollow’s hard cider.  If you are still hungry, visit the Cabot Cheese store and Lake Champlain Chocolates, located right next to one another.  There are enough samples to consider it dinner! Of course, if all of these treats feels a bit indulgent, Pete’s Greens Farm Market is there to save you from guilt.

The food tour is only just beginning on the drive towards Stowe.  Once you arrive in Stowe itself, the culinary choices are outstanding.  There are the long-term food staples of Harrison’s and the Whip Bar & Grill, both located on Main street.   Newer to the restaurant scene in Stowe, and gaining numerous accolades, is Doc Ponds.  This new venture from the owners of the world renowned Hen of the Woods, is an eclectic beer bar that happens to produce amazingly delicious and creative food.  Doc Ponds takes their focus on local to a whole new fun level.  Share some small plates with friends while old-school vinyl spins in the background.  Another great choice for eating out in Stowe is Plate.  This small restaurant brings the cool California vibe to Vermont.  Other equally attractive food choices include The Bench, The Roost, and Bistro at Ten Acres.  For a more casual and laid-back après-ski experience, Piecasso or the Matterhorn are great choices.   Upon walking into the Matterhorn, one immediately thinks pizza and pub fare are at hand.  However, a little known secret to locals is that Matterhorn has some of the best sushi in Vermont.  Delivered fresh six days a week from Boston’s largest seafood market, Matterhorn has been successfully making sushi for the last 17 years.   One could write an entire book on the many additional (and wonderful) restaurant choices in Stowe.

There are numerous gorgeous wedding venues in the Stowe area, the most well-known located within the various resorts.  Stowe Mountain Resort, the largest and certainly the poshest of the resorts, is a top choice.  Built in 2008, your breath is immediately taken away by the grand entrance of this hotel with wall to ceiling views of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak.  Stowe Mountain Resort offers several options for your ceremony and reception, including the Cliff House, which can only be accessed by gondola.  The resort is so grand that one would not have to leave for anything.  In fact, perhaps for those non-skiing friends, the spa at Stowe Mountain Resort is pure heaven.

If you are seeking an equally beautiful experience with a bit more intimacy, the Topnotch Resort will not disappoint.  A $15 million-dollar renovation was completed in 2013 and has helped to elevate this resort to the next level.  Don’t let the smaller size of this resort fool you.  The activities and amenities are plentiful and also allow for top-notch, personalized customer service.

Another popular wedding location is the Trapp Family Lodge.  The Von Trapp family, whose story was immortalized in the Sound of Music, relocated to Vermont and opened the lodge on 2,500 acres overlooking the beautiful green mountains.

Stowe Vermont Wedding Locations

We would be remiss not to mention some of the other wonderful wedding locations in Stowe, such as the Stoweflake Resort and Spa, the Green Mountain Inn, Edson Hill, and the Stowehof.  New to the hotel scene in Stowe, is Field Guide.  There are also various other smaller resorts and locations that are very well regarded in Stowe.

The majority of Stowe’s activities revolve around the outdoors.  Winter activities include various skiing opportunities, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sleigh rides.  For the non-snow seasons, favorite adventures include walking or biking the Stowe recreation path, hiking, swimming, and kayaking.   However, when the weather does not cooperate, the newly open Stowe Bowl, located in the Sun & Ski Inn and Suites, offers “boutique” bowling.  This unique bowling experience is located in an upscale lounge and offers original and delicious food.   If bowling is not your thing, take a step back in time with a visit to the old-school Stowe cinema. This cozy theater has a liquor license which allows for adult beverages with your flick.  Finally, if your resort does not offer enough of an aquatic experience, you can purchase a day pass at the indoor Swimming Hole.  This community pool and fitness center was built in a barn-like building and offers a smaller “splash park” for children with a water slide and play area.

Stowe has so much to offer in any season.  It’s a wonderful location for a destination wedding, an elopement, or just a visit.
