Vermont Engagement Shoot Locations

Location, Location, Location. While that phrase is often heard in the real estate world, it also rings true for photography. The right photography location is essential in setting the tone of your engagement session. Picking a setting that fits your style as a couple will help to facilitate a fun and meaningful shoot. While the choices in Vermont are endless, below are my top 10 suggestions for your engagement photo locations (in no particular order):

Shelburne Farms

Hands down, Shelburne Farms is my favorite place to spend with couples. A dynamic location with a plethora of options for unique photos, Shelburne Farms has mature tree-lined winding roads, open fields filled with hay bales, and the gorgeous Lake Champlain with the Adirondack Mountains as a backdrop. Couples can choose to be photographed with barns, antique farm equipment, beaches, and a variety of unique architecture. Not only is this private location easy to navigate, but the Farm has also been incredibly accommodating by allowing us to have sessions when the farm is closed to the public. If that were not enough, they even welcome pets!

Burlington Waterfront

The waterfront at Lake Champlain in Burlington is breathtaking during any season. In addition to the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, there are also many other great options. Think industrial buildings, train tracks, and a park with wooden swings- all with Lake Champlain as the backdrop. The sunsets over the mountains and lake are phenomenal and provide for enhanced natural lighting for this special session.

Your Wedding Venue

Some couples choose to have their engagement photographs to be taken at the site that they have chosen for their wedding. Not only does this provide some sentimental value to your photos, but it also gives us both the chance to get a close-up feel for the venue prior to the Big Day: we can find great spots for portraits, meet with the on-site event coordinator, and/or start talking about your vision for your wedding day.

Vermont Ski Mountain Resort

For the more active or adventurous couple, a ski resort could be a fantastic choice for your engagement photos. From large resorts like Killington or Stowe to smaller mountains such as Bolton Valley or Smuggler's Notch, the options are as vast as the mountains themselves. And while photos on skis are perfectly acceptable, don't rule out the other seasons!

Trapp Family Lodge

The breathtaking views at Trapp Family Lodge are unlike any others. Overlooking the Worcester Mountain range and the Nebraska Valley Mountain Range, the gorgeous vistas and lush fields are truly perfect for an engagement session. While beautiful year-round, the Trapp Family Lodge tops my favorite fall locations for engagement shoots.

Shelburne Museum

This location, steeped in deep history, offers the opportunity to bring the couple back in time. The grounds of the museum are vast and filled with gorgeous landscape and flowers. Shelburne Museum is one of the best places for an engagement session as it offers many unique photo opportunities such as weeping willow trees, a covered bridge, several unique stone buildings, a lighthouse, and the famous antique carousel.

Your Special Place

Those of us who have spent any time in Vermont all have a special place. As your engagement session should capture the both of you and your unique personality as a couple, why not choose your "place" to take your photos? Perhaps you met on your college campus? Do you have a favorite hike, spot, or restaurant? It's wonderful to watch the photos come alive when taken at a location that is special to the hearts of those being photographed.

Church Street Marketplace

Bustling with energy, downtown Burlington is a photographer's playground. From the cool architecture to the neat cafés, Church Street and its surrounding areas does not disappoint. From the library to the movie theater, there is great architecture in Burlington. If you choose to have your photos taken in the summertime, the Farmer's market could also provide a fun atmosphere for your engagement session.

A College Campus

New England is known for its vine-covered ivy towers on college campuses. From Middlebury College to the University of Vermont to Dartmouth, there are many photo opportunities here!

Your Family Home

If Vermont holds special meaning for you due to the memories formed in your family or vacation home, this could be a beautiful place to have your engagement photographs taken. I always consider it a privilege to be invited to shoot at someone's family home as the resulting photographs are always full of life!
